The Cardiff Blues squad for the upcoming season is starting to come together after Cardiff Rugby Life confirmed the list of players departing this summer, as well as the re-signing of Fa’ao Filise and Matthew Rees, while the club confirmed their academy intake for 2017/18
With two new signings confirmed by the club having join up for pre-season, but Franco van der Merwe set to move on, it takes the size of the senior squad, with senior academy members, to around 50 for the coming season.

The squad graphic includes those players who have been named in the ‘transition’ section of the academy and will be training with the Cardiff Blues first team on a full-time basis this season.
A decent size squad for Danny Wilson to work with, including very healthy looking front and back row departments, while the backs contain some particularly exciting attacking talent.
Plenty of potential amongst the academy squad and young players in the senior side is a big bonus, with 12 involved in the Junior World Championship over the summer, while Rhun Williams and Seb Davies were both called up to the Wales senior squad before injury struck for the full-back.

If the injury crisis of last season can be avoided then it’s certainly a squad that can compete for top six, with a mix of experience and youth, but team selections will need to be spot on from Danny to maximise the qualities of certain players.
Squad rotation will be key, giving everyone a chance to prove themselves without burning them out, while trusting young players will form a big part of the season. Overall I’m confident of a successful season, let’s see how long that lasts!
