Posted by Welsh winger Kristian Phillips has joined Cardiff Blues on a short-term trial basis in an attempt to secure a full-time contract at Wales’ capital region.
The former Wales 7s player has linked up with the Blues at the Vale Resort after they missed out on Leigh Halfpenny, who opted to move to the Scarlets on a National Dual Contract.
Neath-born Phillips has been without a club after failing to impress Bath coach Todd Blackadder enough to win a contract in the West Country following the demise of London Welsh leaving him without employment.
Before that the 26-year-old had spent six years at Ospreys in two spells, either side of three seasons with the Scarlets, as well as playing for Bridgend, Llandovery and Llanelli in the Principality Premiership.
The Wales U20 cap made his debut off the bench in Cardiff Blues’ 23-34 pre-season friendly victory over London Scottish on Saturday, playing for 25 minutes but was unable to make much of an impact as the team were penned in their own half for long periods of the second half.
Competition will be tough for Phillips in Cardiff, with Wales international wingers Alex Cuthbert and Tom James, as well as USA Eagles captain Blaine Scully, in the ranks at the Arms Park, alongside young star Rhun Williams and Aled Summerhill, who grabbed a hat-trick on Saturday.
With only one pre-season friendly remaining for Cardiff Blues it’s possible time has run out for Phillips to impress in a game setting, as Danny Wilson looks to give his first team some game time, leaving him to try and catch the eye in training.
