Posted by Cardiff Blues have announced that Sir Gareth Edwards has stepped down as a Director of Cardiff Blues Limited, the company that run both Cardiff Blues and Cardiff RFC, with immediate effect.
It brings to an end a 22 year stint in the boardroom at the Arms Park which began at the start of rugby union turning professional and has encompassed the birth of regional rugby in Wales.
That of course followed a glittering playing career with Cardiff RFC that lasted 12 years between 1966 and 1978, with 195 appearances producing 426 points for Edwards, including 67 tries.
The scrum-half also won 53 Wales caps and 10 British and Irish Lions caps, as well as scoring ‘that try’ for the Barbarians against New Zealand. He was knighted in 2015 for services to sport and charity.
Speaking to the Cardiff Blues official website, Sir Gareth said, “”It has been an absolute honour and privilege to serve as a director of the company for so long.
“When Peter Thomas took on the chairmanship he asked if I would join the board and I was delighted to give something back to the club, as it was then, which had done so much for me and Cardiff Blues as it is today.
“It has not been without its ups and downs but my involvement has been most enjoyable and I will certainly remain a supporter in the stands at Cardiff Arms Park as the region enters a new era.”
