Posted by Wales fly-half Gareth Anscombe will make a summer switch from Cardiff Blues to the Ospreys, as he confirms he will stay in the country beyond this year’s Rugby World Cup.
The 27-year-old has been at Cardiff Blues since arriving in Wales back in 2014, making 76 appearances and scoring 593 points to date. He is currently third on the post-2003 points scoring list, with his most notable kick coming in the 79th minute against Gloucester in Bilbao last May to win the European Challenge Cup.
Anscombe joined from New Zealand, having played for the Blues and the Chiefs in Super Rugby, as well as turning out for the All Blacks’ U20 side, ‘the Baby Blacks’. He also played New Zealand Provincial Rugby for Auckland.
His National Dual Contract was due up at the end of the season, with NDCs now off the table. Cardiff Blues were confident of retaining his signature, while there was also a link to Bath who were rumoured to have offered a contract worth £500,000 a year.
However, Ospreys have got in first and secured Anscombe’s signature, meaning he will head West after the World Cup, linking up again with former Cardiff Blues attack coach Matt Sherratt at the Liberty Stadium.
This leaves only Jarrod Evans as senior fly-half cover at the Arms Park currently, with Steve Shingler having been released from his contract to join Mont-de-Marsan in the French ProD2.
Speaking to the Ospreys official website, Anscombe said “I would like to thank everyone at the Blues for the last five years of continuous support.
“They have an incredible team of people working behind the scenes to help the boys, along with some of the best supporters around, I can’t thank them enough for all they have done for me since arriving from NZ.
“Thanks also to a great group of boys playing at the club who welcomed me and made me feel at home from the start. I will continue to do my best for the team until the end of the season and I will leave with many happy memories of my time with the Blues.”
